Orthodontic emergencies can occasionally happen during treatment, but many common issues can be managed temporarily at home until you are able to visit our office. At Quad City Orthodontics, our team is here to help guide you through orthodontic emergencies and provide care as quickly as possible when urgent issues arise.
Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories: appliance-related concerns and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
What Should I Do if a Wire or Bracket Is Causing Discomfort?
Sometimes braces or orthodontic appliances may become loose, bent, or irritating. Here are a few temporary solutions that may help until your appointment:
Irritating Tie Wire
If a tie wire is poking or irritating your cheek or gums, place orthodontic wax over the area or gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser.
Loose Brackets or Bands
Loose brackets or bands can often remain in place temporarily until they are repaired. Contact our office during business hours so we can schedule an appointment.
Broken or Poking Archwire
If an archwire is causing discomfort, it may sometimes be carefully bent using a pencil eraser. In certain situations, small nail clippers may be used to trim a protruding wire if absolutely necessary.
What Should I Do After an Injury to the Mouth or Teeth?
If a direct injury occurs involving the teeth or mouth:
- Apply ice to the affected area immediately
- Contact your general dentist as soon as possible
- An X-ray may be needed to evaluate the injury
If a tooth has been displaced, fractured, or knocked out, your family dentist should typically provide the initial emergency care. After the injury has been stabilized, our team can evaluate and adjust any damaged orthodontic appliances if needed.
When Should I Contact the Orthodontist?
You should contact our office if you experience:
- Persistent pain or discomfort
- A broken appliance affecting treatment
- Significant swelling or injury
- A wire that cannot be adjusted safely at home
- Damage to braces or aligners that interferes with eating or speaking
Our team will help determine whether an immediate visit is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Orthodontic emergencies can feel stressful, but many situations can be managed safely until you are able to visit our office. Here are answers to some common emergency orthodontic questions.
Is a Loose Bracket Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?
Not always. Loose brackets are common during treatment and can often wait until your next available appointment unless they are causing significant discomfort.
What Can I Use if I Run Out of Orthodontic Wax?
If orthodontic wax is unavailable, temporary alternatives such as sugar-free gum may sometimes help cover an irritating bracket or wire until you can obtain more wax.
Should I Go to My Dentist or Orthodontist After a Dental Injury?
For injuries involving broken, displaced, or knocked-out teeth, your general dentist should usually be contacted first for immediate care.
Can I Still Attend School or Work With a Broken Wire?
In many cases, yes. Minor wire irritation can often be temporarily managed at home until you are able to visit our office for repair.
How Quickly Can I Be Seen for an Orthodontic Emergency in Bettendorf, Rock Island, or Geneseo?
Our team works to schedule orthodontic emergency appointments as quickly as possible to help relieve discomfort and keep your treatment progressing properly.
